A year after Israel's devastating operation in Gaza, Palestinians are mourning its victims. The war claimed the lives of 1,400 Palestinians, according to human rights groups on both sides, and 13 Israelis.
Hamas supporters took to the streets of Gaza to mark the anniversary of the war that lasted three weeks from the end of December 2008 to January 2009.
Even now, the war and its aftermath remain largely overlooked by the international community. Some say it is because there are double standards when it comes to accusing countries of war crimes.
Nearly twelve months after “Operation Cast Lead” in Gaza, accusations of war crimes still hang over the Israeli army. This is of no surprise, according to Israeli lawyer Yoram Sheftel. He defended John Demjanjuk, who stood trial in Israel for war crimes against Jews. In one of the country’s most important cases, Sheftel convinced the judges that Demjanjuk was not the Nazi camp guard responsible for killing nearly 30,000 Jews in World War Two.
Sheftel is a controversial figure in Israel, but no one disputes he knows his law. He is convinced Israel will not have to answer charges of war crimes in front of the international courts for what it did in Gaza.
“I dislike the idea that only nations like Serbia and Rwanda will be brought to The Hague. There is a lot of hatred against Serbia, which in a sense they earned quite rightfully. But they are a very weak nation politically, whoever commits such or similar acts belonging to strong nations will never be brought to any justice,” Sheftel says.
It is a view echoed in Serbia where for many years Ljiljana Smajlovic edited the country’s leading daily newspaper, Politika. She says it is nothing more than politics – powerful nations get away with murder whereas weaker ones are held to ransom.
“The countries that co-operate with international tribunals, I’m afraid, are countries that have to do so. If they don’t do that they will not be able to integrate into the wider communities that they belong to. Countries like Israel, who cannot be blackmailed, that have US support, they have no reason to co-operate, because there’s not enough enticement for them, they cannot be touched,” believes Ljiljana Smajlovic.
After the former Yugoslavia disintegrated into war in the 1990s, Belgrade needed funds from Brussels to help recover. In addition to the millions of dollars it received, it is now hoping the European Union will give it 300 million more to help cope with the global economic crisis.
But it comes at a price. Serb lawyer Goran Petronijevic believes that price is his client Radovan Karadzic. The latter is standing trial in the Netherlands for war crimes he allegedly committed during the Bosnian war. Petronijevic says Belgrade handed him over to get closer to Europe.
“International criminal courts have to exist but The Hague tribunal is unfair. It doesn’t judge everyone who appears in front of it equally. As far as Israel goes, it is connected with America and Serbia is not. America has had a monopoly over this area for years – if they say you’re guilty, then you are, regardless of whether it’s true or not,” the lawyer said.
But pressure is mounting against Israel after the United Nations published the Goldstone Report. It says both sides, including the Israeli army, committed war crimes in Gaza.
Over the years there have been calls for Israeli army officers to stand trial. In 2001, former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was accused by victims of the Palestinian massacres in Lebanon of committing war crimes.
And four years later, Major General Doron Almog was tipped off not to leave his plane when it landed in England as an arrest warrant had been issued against him on suspicion of war crimes his forces committed in Gaza in early 2000.
So far no Israeli has ever stood trial – and whether one ever will depends as much on American support and world opinion as it does on whether or not the crimes actually took place.

A passenger who boarded Northwest Airlines Flight 253 in Amsterdam with attempted plane bomber Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab says the would-be terrorist had no passport and was aided by a sharp-dressed man who claimed Mutallab was a Sudanese refugee, just one of a plethora of startling inconsistencies surrounding an incident that has led to ramped up security and increased levels of harassment in airports.
Every single fact that has come to light since the attempted bombing on Christmas Day directly indicates that the bomber was deliberately allowed to board the plane and that his attack would have succeeded if not for the alert and brave reactions of the passengers and flight crew.
According to Kurt Haskell, an attorney with the Haskell Law Firm in Taylor, Michigan, “He and his wife were sitting on the ground near their boarding gate in Amsterdam, which is when they saw Mutallab approach the gate with an unidentified man.”
Mutallab was a poorly dressed, young looking individual, but he was accompanied by a man in an expensive suit, Haskell told MLive.com.
“He says the suited man asked ticket agents whether Mutallab could board without a passport. “The guy said, ‘He’s from Sudan and we do this all the time.’”
Although Mutallab is Nigerian, Haskell said the well-dressed man portrayed him as a desperate Sudanese refugee in an attempt to elicit sympathy and as a way of bypassing his lack of documents.
“The ticket agent referred Mutallab and his companion to her manager down the hall, and Haskell didn’t see Mutallab again until after he allegedly tried to detonate an explosive on the plane,” states the report.
Crucially, Haskell said that after the plane landed he saw another man being taken into custody by the FBI along with Mutallab. However, the FBI later said that Mutallab was the only individual taken into custody.
Were the feds retrieving their own agent, the sharp dressed man who ensured that Mutallab boarded the plane despite his overwhelmingly suspicious circumstances?Mutallab was a known security threat who was on the terror watch list. He is barred from entering Britain after being refused a new visa due to applying for a fake university course. Separate reports said that he did hold a valid visa, which begs the question, how can someone on a terror watch list be allowed to fly?
“On the one hand, it seems he’s been on the terror watch list but not on the no-fly list,” he said. “That doesn’t square because the American Department for Homeland Security has pretty stringent data-mining capability. I don’t understand how he had a valid visa if he was known on the terror watch list,” Dr Magnus Ranstorp of the Center for Asymmetric Threat Studies told the London Independent.
It has also been revealed that Mutallab’s father contacted U.S. intelligence officials a month ago and warned them that his son was a threat, but nothing was done.
The bomber’s father, Alhaji Umaru Mutallab, was a a former minister and chairman of First Bank in Nigeria. The bomber does not fit the image of a disgruntled, rag-tag terrorist. His considerable wealth allowed him to live in luxury at an imposing London mansion.
As a result of the failed attack, new security directives have been introduced for anyone traveling into America. Intense body and hand-luggage searches and sniffer dogs have been beefed up at departure gates and passengers have been ordered not to stand during the final hour of the flight and are not allowed access to any of their hand luggage during the final hour.
However, if you’re a suspicious looking man on a terror watch list with no passport carrying explosives, you should breeze through security with no questions asked, just be sure to have a sharp-dressed man with you at all times.

Le 1er Octobre 2009, Dianne Feinstein, sénatrice démocrate de Californie annonçait devant le congrès américain l’ouverture d’un centre d’un nouveau genre : le Centre sur le changement climatique et la sécurité nationale. Sa mission est d’étudier les effets du réchauffement climatique sous l’angle sécuritaire. L’aspect économique n’a pas été oublié. Le centre aidera également les entreprises américaines à se positionner au mieux dans un secteur en plein essor, celui des ressources naturelles. Et ce n’est pas tout, alors que les Etats-Unis ont toujours refusé de se soumettre au système de surveillance mis en place par le protocole de Kyoto, le centre effectuera sa propre surveillance satellite sur les autres pays.
Cette collaboration entre la CIA et les scientifiques révèlent l’intérêt des Etats-Unis pour les changements à venir. Bien que l’initiative soit récente, la stratégie américaine, elle, est ancienne et s’inscrit dans « leur volonté de domination et d’hégémonie », comme le souligne David Mascré, professeur de géopolitique à l’Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Relations Internationales. Selon lui, « le climat est considéré depuis longtemps, par les Américains, comme un facteur stratégique majeur ».
En effet, l’importance de la question climatique a été remise au centre des préoccupations dans le 4ème rapport sur la prévision des enjeux majeurs à venir, rédigé par le service de renseignement américain. Dans ce document, Thomas Fingar, directeur de la CIA, évoque la nécessité de mesurer l’impact de ces changements sur la puissance américaine du point de vue géopolitique, militaire et économique. Il prévient également de l’augmentation des tensions et des conflits à venir dans l’accès aux ressources naturelles.
Le réchauffement climatique n’est plus simplement qu’une question environnementale, c’est devenu un enjeu stratégique majeur. Un aspect qui n’est pas envisagé aussi clairement en Europe où le débat demeure entre les mains des scientifiques. La surveillance du climat est confiée à l’Agence Spatiale Européenne (ESA) qui dispose du satellite ENVISAT. Relevés de température des eaux, surveillance du niveau des mers et de l’état des terres émergées, le satellite européen apporte de nombreuses données aux scientifiques sur l’évolution du climat. Un outil qui manque toutefois de précision concernant les émissions de dioxyde de carbone, comme le précise le directeur de la stratégie et des programmes au CNES (Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales), Didier Renaut. Et pour combler cette lacune, le CNES développe son propre programme, nommé Microcarb. Un programme qui pour le moment est en phase d’étude et pourrait voir le jour d’ici 4 ou 5 ans.
En attendant, pour tenter de limiter ces changements climatiques, les Etats doivent se restreindre à leurs engagements pris lors du sommet de Kyoto. Car même si tous les pays, actuellement réunis à Copenhague, s’accordent sur de nouvelles mesures plus contraignantes, la question de la surveillance demeure, elle, toujours en suspend…

Israel has admitted pathologists harvested organs from dead Palestinians, and others, without the consent of their families – a practice it said ended in the 1990s – it emerged at the weekend.
The admission, by the former head of the country's forensic institute, followed a furious row prompted by a Swedish newspaper reporting that Israel was killing Palestinians in order to use their organs – a charge that Israel denied and called "antisemitic".
The revelation, in a television documentary, is likely to generate anger in the Arab and Muslim world and reinforce sinister stereotypes of Israel and its attitude to Palestinians. Iran's state-run Press TV tonight reported the story, illustrated with photographs of dead or badly injured Palestinians.
Ahmed Tibi, an Israeli Arab MP, said the report incriminated the Israeli army.
The story emerged in an interview with Dr Yehuda Hiss, former head of the Abu Kabir forensic institute near Tel Aviv. The interview was conducted in 2000 by an American academic who released it because of the row between Israel and Sweden over a report in the Stockholm newspaper Aftonbladet.
Channel 2 TV reported that in the 1990s, specialists at Abu Kabir harvested skin, corneas, heart valves and bones from the bodies of Israeli soldiers, Israeli citizens, Palestinians and foreign workers, often without permission from relatives.
The Israeli military confirmed to the programme that the practice took place, but added: "This activity ended a decade ago and does not happen any longer."
Hiss said: "We started to harvest corneas ... whatever was done was highly informal. No permission was asked from the family."
However, there was no evidence that Israel had killed Palestinians to take their organs, as the Swedish paper reported. Aftonbladet quoted Palestinians as saying young men from the West Bank and Gaza Strip had been seized by the Israeli forces and their bodies returned to their families with missing organs. She was quoted by the Associated Press as saying that while Palestinians were "by a long shot" not the only ones affected, she felt the interview must be made public, because "the symbolism, you know, of taking skin of the population considered to be the enemy, [is] something, just in terms of its symbolic weight, that has to be reconsidered."
Israel demanded that Sweden condemn the Aftonbladet article, calling it an antisemitic "blood libel". Stockholm refused, saying that to so would violate freedom of speech in the country. The foreign minister then cancelled a visit to Israel, just as Sweden was taking over the EU's rotating presidency.
Hiss was removed from his post in 2004, when some details about organ harvesting were first reported, but he still works at the forensic institute.
Israel's health ministry said all harvesting was now done with permission. "The guidelines at that time were not clear," it said in a statement to Channel 2. "For the last 10 years, Abu Kabir has been working according to ethics and Jewish law."
