An Israeli patrol boat struck a boat carrying medical volunteers and supplies to Gaza early Tuesday as it attempted to intercept the vessel in the Mediterranean Sea, witnesses and Israeli officials said.
CNN Correspondent Karl Penhaul was aboard the 60-foot, Gibraltar-registered pleasure boat Dignity when the contact occurred. When the boat later docked in the Lebanese port city of Tyre, severe damage was visible to the forward port side of the boat, and the front left window and part of the roof had collapsed.
The Dignity was carrying crew and 16 passengers -- physicians from Britain, Germany and Cyprus and human rights activists, including former U.S. Rep. Cynthia McKinney -- who were trying to reach Gaza through an Israeli blockade of the territory.
The captain of the Dignity said the Israelis broadcast a radio message accusing the vessel of being involved in terrorist activity. But Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor denied that and said the radio message simply warned the vessel not to proceed to Gaza because it is a closed military area.
Palmor said there was no response to the radio message, and the vessel then tried to out-maneuver the Israeli patrol boat, leading to the collision.
Penhaul said at least two Israeli patrol boats had shadowed the Dignity for about half an hour before the collision, moving around the vessel on all sides. One of the patrol boats then shined its spotlight on the Dignity while the other, with its lights off, "very severely rammed" the boat.
The captain of the Dignity told Penhaul he received no prior warning. Only after the collision did the Israelis come on the radio to say they struck the boat because they believed it was involved in terrorist activities.
The captain and crew said their vessel was struck intentionally, Penhaul said, but Palmor called those allegations "absurd."
"There is no intention on the part of the Israeli navy to ram anybody," Palmor said.
"I would call it ramming. Let's just call it as it is," McKinney said. "Our boat was rammed three times, twice in the front and one on the side.
"Our mission was a peaceful mission to deliver medical supplies and our mission was thwarted by the Israelis -- the aggressiveness of the Israeli military," she said.
The incident occurred in international waters about 90 miles off Gaza. Israel controls the waters off Gaza's coast and routinely blocks ships from coming into the Palestinian territory as part of an ongoing blockade that also applies to the Israel-Gaza border. Human rights groups have expressed concern about the blockade on Gaza, which has restricted the delivery of emergency aid and fuel supplies.
The collision was so severe, Penhaul said, that the passengers were ordered to put on their life vests and be ready to get in lifeboats. The Dignity began taking on water, but the crew managed to pump it out of the hull long enough for the boat to reach shore.
Palmor said the vessel refused assistance after the incident.
The boat was carrying boxes of relief supplies, volunteers and journalists to Gaza, the Palestinian territory now subject to an intense Israeli bombing campaign.
Israel launched airstrikes against Gaza on Saturday in what Defense Minister Ehud Barak called an "all-out war" against the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which has ruled the territory since 2007.
The Palestinian death toll has topped 375, most of them Hamas militants, Palestinian medical sources said Tuesday. At least 60 civilians have been killed in Gaza, U.N. officials said.

Hamas has responded with volleys of rocket fire aimed at southern Israeli towns, which have left six Israelis dead -- five of them civilians.
Hamas has vowed to defend Gaza in the face of what it calls continued Israeli aggression. Each side blames the other for violating an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire, which formally expired December 19 but had been weakening for months.

Over 2000 people protested outside the Israeli embassy against the slaughter of innocent Palestinian civilians in Gaza, in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle to exist. The protest became so large that the police lost control of the streets, forcing them to call for reinforcements. When I left the protest as darkness fell the streets outside the Israeli embassy were still filled with chanting protesters as police struggled to regain control. Further protests are planned for Monday 29th December from 4pm outside the Israeli embassy and on Saturday 3rd January 2009 in Parliament Square London.

10 - Obama has gone back on his word to punish the Bush administration for war crimes.................................. 9 - Obama has appointed former Sec. of Energy, Bill Richardson (from the Clinton Administration), as Sec. of Commerce. Richardson's tenure at the Energy Department was marred by reports of security lapses in nuclear laboratories. During one contentious hearing, Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia told him "you would never again receive the support of the Senate of the United States for any office to which you might be appointed." So how is rewarding ineptitude change? 8 - Obama's Vice President elect, Joe Biden, is endorsing a bill that ends net neutrality as we know it and will take away much of our freedom on the Internet, the last safe haven for people of truth and honesty to tell their stories before the dark ages are re-instated. 7 - Obama is considering with Rahm Emanuel (his Chief of Staff) a Universal Civilian Defense Program which is a new propaganda and public relations term for the already existing National Guard militia. In other words, he is re-instating the draft. If this sounds familiar, it should. A similar program was proposed in 2007 by former Republican Congressman and former Nixon administration Sec. of Defense, Melvin R. Laird. 6 - Obama is NOT reversing the Patriot Act, the Homeland Security Act, any of the unconstitutional changes in all the Defense Authorization Acts, and the Military Commissions Act which took away our right to Habeas Corpus, one of the MOST IMPORTANT and VITAL pieces of legislation that made this country great! 5 - Obama supported the Detroit bailout - which was completely against the majoritys requests. This should come as no surprise because Obama voted FOR the Financial sector BAILOUT bill. Not much of a "change from what we've had! 4 - Obama has now completely reversed his position on TAX breaks for the rich and now has stated, after giving it some thought, he will keep this policy he campaigned against which helped him get elected. I guess he CHANGED his mind. 3 - Obama has picked a Republican drug warrior (and recovering alcoholic), Jim Ramstad, to be his "Drug Czar". It looks like the "War on Drugs" will continue without change. 2 - Obama is keeping the current Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates (a Republican), in that position! Gates should feel right at home - with the new Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel who is outspoken in his SUPPORT for the war in Iraq. How is this change? 1 - Obama is slowly going back on his word about getting us out of Iraq (who had NOTHING to do with 9/11) and has publicly said that all options, including nuclear, are on the table with Iran (who also had NOTHING to do with 9/11). Obama continues packing his cabinet with the most pro-war Democrats AND Republicans that he can find. For many who supported Obama, his level of betrayal has quickly growing - and he's not even in office yet! As MANY Libertarians had predicted, there may be VERY LITTLE, if any, difference between Obama and Bush. So meet the new boss same as the old boss.

Reuters reports that Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested on criminal charges on Tuesday, including trying to sell the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by fellow Democrat President-elect Barack Obama, federal prosecutors said.
Blagojevich was also accused of threatening to withhold substantial state assistance to the Tribune Company in connection with the sale of the Chicago Cubs' baseball home Wrigley Field "to induce the firing of Chicago Tribune editorial board members sharply critical" of him.
The 51-year-old Blagojevich and his chief of staff, John Harris, were charged in a 76-page federal indictment with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and solicitation of bribery. Both were taken into custody at their homes in Chicago.

On October 15, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg appeared together in Los Angeles at a press conference to endorse CA Prop 11. The slogan of the campaign was "Time to Hold Politicians Accountable." Stewart Howe and Jeremy Rothe-Kushel of WeAreChangeLA attended the press conference to give it a go at doing just that.
During the brief Q+A part of the press conference, Jeremy was able to get a question in that spoke to the American people's general distrust of and dissatisfaction with their public officials. Included in the question was an assertion that at least 50% of the people in Mayor Bloomberg's city of New York think there is a serious cover-up of 9/11 and that the Mayor has apparently positioned himself against the 9/11 family members who still seek truth and justice and the first responders who deserve the same.
Mayor Bloomberg felt the need to to jump in and respond to the question after Governor Schwarzenegger gave his answer. However, he did not reject the assertions or explain himself on those accounts.
After the press conference was over, Stewart went right up to Governor Schwarzenegger and asked him to clear up the concerns that many people have over his strange appearance on the June 25, 2007 cover of Time Magazine with Mayor Bloomberg, in which he conspicuously showed a death-skull belt buckle. Given the fact that Schwarzenegger's father was a Nazi SA (brownshirt) officer, that he openly expressed his admiration for Hitler as an inspirational leader in earlier years, posed doing the "Heil Hitler" salute, and spoke about dreaming of being a dictator during an interview with Rolling Stone, one would think that he would, especially as Governor of the most populous state in the country, want to clear up any misunderstandings around his odd sense of fashion. Although he talked about his sense of fashion and his love for "public service," he did not clear it up.
Additionally, Time Magazine, which was founded by Skull and Bones member Henry Luce, has a deep connection to the beginnings of the CIA, which recruited and stewarded many Nazi spies, scientists and psychologists to safety after WWII in order to put them in service of the free world by folding them into the freshly-inked National Security State. So, there is alot of subtext here that Schwarzenegger felt no need to clear up.
At the same time Stewart was speaking to Schwarzenegger, Jeremy was asking Bloomberg whether he supported a new investigation of 9/11. Bloomberg said "It's been investigated" as he walked on by. Jeremy then presented Schwarzenegger with a packet of information that is evidence of the ongoing treasonous cover-up of the 9/11 attacks. Under the laws of misprision of treason in this country, one is supposed to report treason to the president, judges or governors. Being that Jeremy has already given the information to judges, he felt it was important to give it to the Governor of his state. Now, Schwarzenegger, if he does nothing with the information, is liable to be held to account for misprision of treason at the very least.
Jeremy also asked Schwarzenegger if he supported a new investigation of 9/11 and he didn't answer and instead thanked Jeremy for coming. Jeremy asked again and did not receive an answer and so decided to call after Schwarzenegger about his deathskull belt buckle.
Neither Schwarzenegger nor Bloomberg appear to be serious about being leaders and stepping up to accountability. Any old charismatic thug can be an authoritarian. It takes a serious leader to inspire thought and deep courage in the people while being accountable to their own shortcomings. But hey, these guys look to be more like criminals than leaders.

WASHINGTON The Bush administration backed off proposed crackdowns on no-money-down, interest-only mortgages years before the economy collapsed, buckling to pressure from some of the same banks that have now failed. It ignored remarkably prescient warnings that foretold the financial meltdown, according to an Associated Press review of regulatory documents.
"Expect fallout, expect foreclosures, expect horror stories," California mortgage lender Paris Welch wrote to U.S. regulators in January 2006, about one year before the housing implosion cost her a job.
Bowing to aggressive lobbying — along with assurances from banks that the troubled mortgages were OK — regulators delayed action for nearly one year. By the time new rules were released late in 2006, the toughest of the proposed provisions were gone and the meltdown was under way.
