Surplus main man is John Zerzan, controversial philosopher whose call for PROPERTY DAMAGE has inspired many to take to the streets. "That is not violence. Sitting there doing dope and watching MTV . Then you go and get a job. Just schlep along. To me that is violence," says Zerzan. "We are terrorized into being consumers."

Barely a day goes by that one can avoid reading or hearing yet another Israeli, American or British warhawk regurgitate the broken record that Iran's President Ahmadinejad threatened to "wipe Israel off the map," framed in the ridiculous context that Israeli's are being targeted for a second holocaust. This baseless rallying call for conflict holds about as much credibility as Dick Cheney's assertion that Saddam Hussein was planning to light up American skies with mushroom clouds.
Today it's the turn of would-be future British Prime Minister David Cameron, leader of the Conservative Party, who repeated the "wipe Israel off he map" fraud in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, using it to qualify his refusal to rule out a military strike on Iran under a Tory government.
Did Ahmadinejad really threaten to "wipe Israel off the map" or is this phrase just another jingoistic brand slogan for selling the next war in the Middle East?
The devil is in the detail, wiping Israel off the map suggests a physical genocidal assault, a literal population relocation or elimination akin to what the Nazis did. According to numerous different translations, Ahmadinejad never used the word "map," instead his statement was in the context of time and applied to the Zionist regime occupying Jerusalem. Ahmadinejad was expressing his future hope that the Zionist regime in Israel would fall, not that Iran was going to physically annex the country and its population.
To claim Ahmadinejad has issued a rallying cry to ethnically cleanse Israel is akin to saying that Churchill wanted to murder all Germans when he stated his desire to crush the Nazis. This is about the demise of a corrupt occupying power, not the deaths of millions of innocent people.
The Guardian's Jonathan Steele cites four different translations, from professors to the BBC to the New York Times and even pro-Israel news outlets, in none of those translations is the word "map" used. The closest translation to what the Iranian President actually said is, "The regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time," or a narrow relative thereof. In no version is the word "map" used or a context of mass genocide or hostile military action even hinted at.
The acceptance of the word "map" seemingly originated with the New York Times, who later had to back away from this false translation. The BBC also wrongly used the word and, in comments to Steele, later accepted their mistake but refused to issue a retraction.
"The fact that he compared his desired option - the elimination of "the regime occupying Jerusalem" - with the fall of the Shah's regime in Iran makes it crystal clear that he is talking about regime change, not the end of Israel. As a schoolboy opponent of the Shah in the 1970's he surely did not favor Iran's removal from the page of time. He just wanted the Shah out," writes Steele.
"It's important to note that the "quote" in question was itself a quote, writes Arash Norouzi, "they are the words of the late Ayatollah Khomeini, the father of the Islamic Revolution. Although he quoted Khomeini to affirm his own position on Zionism, the actual words belong to Khomeini and not Ahmadinejad. Thus, Ahmadinejad has essentially been credited (or blamed) for a quote that is not only unoriginal, but represents a viewpoint already in place well before he ever took office."
Professor Juan Cole concurs, arguing, "Now, some might say, "So he didn't say, 'wipe off the map,' he said 'erase from the page.' What's the difference? Anyway he's saying he wants to get rid of Israel. Ahmadinejad was not making a threat, he was quoting a saying of Khomeini and urging that pro-Palestinian activists in Iran not give up hope -- that the occupation of Jerusalem was no more a continued inevitability than had been the hegemony of the Shah's government. Whatever this quotation from a decades-old speech of Khomeini may have meant, Ahmadinejad did not say that 'Israel must be wiped off the map' with the implication that phrase has of Nazi-style extermination of a people. He said that the occupation regime over Jerusalem must be erased from the page of time."
Let's consider for a moment that Ahmadinejad really does wish to initiate a nuclear war on Israel, is this feasible? It would be like Paris Hilton picking a fight with Mike Tyson. The CIA's own estimates put Iran five to ten years away from being able to produce one nuclear bomb even if they were in the planning stages now, which is highly unlikely given that international inspectors have found no evidence of such a program and CIA satellite imagery also shows no proof of nuclear arms. Contrast this to an Israeli arsenal of anything up to 200 launch ready nukes allied to the might of the U.S. which has nearly 6,000 active warheads not to mention so-called "mini-nukes."
While it can be reasonably argued that Iran is seeking a nuclear weapon at some point in the future, to then claim that this means Ahmadinejad wishes to enact a second holocaust is an unfathomable leap of logic. The real reason for any nation in that region trying to acquire a nuclear weapon is for self defense, because they are surrounded by other hostile powers that already have the bomb.
Returning to the "wipe Israel off the map hoax," loathe are we to forget another of the commercial jingles concocted for hoodwinking Americans into attacking a certain other Middle Eastern country - "he used weapons of mass destruction against his own people," referring of course to Saddam Hussein's alleged role in the Halabja massacre where Iraqi Kurds were gassed. In reality, as former CIA analyst Stephen Pelletiere has revealed, Halabja came as a result of a battlefield exchange between the Iranians and the Iraqis after the Kurds had sided with the Iranians and allowed them to enter the city. According to the DIA's own report at the time, the type of gas that killed the Kurds was not used by the Iraqis but was used by the Iranians. The incident was a tragedy of war, not a directed program of genocide at the behest of Saddam Hussein.
Whenever Bush administration officials and others used Halabja as a pretext for war, the mass media routinely failed to mention the DIA report, just as they have failed to provide any balance on the real meaning of Ahmadinejad's statement, despite the fact that it is completely distorted almost every day and used as a call to arms as well as a propagandistic ploy to convince western populations that dark skinned invaders are hell-bent on their wholesale destruction.

Five Israelis Were Seen Filming the Attacks on 9/11
There was ruin and terror in Manhattan, but, over the Hudson River in New Jersey, a handful of men were dancing. As the World Trade Centre burned and crumpled, the five men celebrated and filmed the worst atrocity ever committed on American soil as it played out before their eyes. Who do you think they were? Palestinians? Saudis? Iraqis, even? Al-Qaeda, surely? Wrong on all counts. They were Israelis ? and at least two of them were Israeli intelligence agents, working for Mossad, the equivalent of MI6 or the CIA.
Their discovery and arrest that morning is a matter of indisputable fact. To those who have investigated just what the Israelis were up to that day, the case raises one dreadful possibility: that Israeli intelligence had been shadowing the al-Qaeda hijackers as they moved from the Middle East through Europe and into America where they trained as pilots and prepared to suicide-bomb the symbolic heart of the United States. And the motive? To bind America in blood and mutual suffering to the Israeli cause.
After the attacks on New York and Washington, the former Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, was asked what the terrorist strikes would mean for USA-Israeli relations. He said: "It's very good." Then he corrected himself, adding: "Well, it's not good, but it will generate immediate sympathy [for Israel from Americans]." If Israel's closest ally felt the collective pain of mass civilian deaths at the hands of terrorists, then Israel would have an unbreakable bond with the world's only hyperpower and an effective free hand in dealing with the Palestinian terrorists who had been murdering its innocent civilians as the second Intifada dragged on throughout 2001.
It's not surprising that the New Jersey housewife who first spotted the five Israelis and their white van wants to preserve her anonymity. She's insisted that she only be identified as Maria. A neighbour in her apartment building had called her just after the first strike on the Twin Towers. Maria grabbed a pair of binoculars and, like millions across the world, she watched the horror of the day unfold. As she gazed at the burning towers, she noticed a group of men kneeling on the roof of a white van in her parking lot. Here's her recollection: "They seemed to be taking a movie. They were like happy, you know É they didn't look shocked to me. I thought it was strange."
Maria jotted down the van's registration and called the police. The FBI was alerted and soon there was a state-wide all points bulletin put out for the apprehension of the van and its occupants. The cops traced the number, establishing that it belonged to a company called Urban Moving. Police Chief John Schmidig said: "We got an alert to be on the lookout for a white Chevrolet van with New Jersey registration and writing on the side. Three individuals were seen celebrating in Liberty State Park after the impact. They said three people were jumping up and down."
By 4pm on the afternoon of September 11, the van was spotted near New Jersey's Giants stadium. A squad car pulled it over and inside were five men in their 20s. They were hustled out of the car with guns levelled at their heads and handcuffed. In the car was $4700 in cash, a couple of foreign passports and a pair of box cutters ? the concealed Stanley Knife-type blades used by the 19 hijackers who'd flown jetliners into the World Trade Centre and Pentagon just hours before. There were also fresh pictures of the men standing with the smouldering wreckage of the Twin Towers in the background. One image showed a hand flicking a lighter in front of the devastated buildings, like a fan at a pop concert.
The driver of the van then told the arresting officers: "We are Israeli. We are not your problem. Your problems are our problems. The Palestinians are the problem." His name was Sivan Kurzberg. The other four passengers were Kurzberg's brother Paul, Yaron Shmuel, Oded Ellner and Omer Marmari. The men were dragged off to prison and transferred out of the custody of the FBI's Criminal Division and into the hands of their Foreign Counterintelligence Section ? the bureau's anti-espionage squad.
A warrant was issued for a search of the Urban Moving premises in Weehawken in New Jersey. Boxes of papers and computers were removed. The FBI questioned the firm's Israeli owner, Dominik Otto Suter, but when agents returned to re-interview him a few days later, he was gone. An employee of Urban Moving said his co-workers had laughed about the Manhattan attacks the day they happened. "I was in tears," the man said. "These guys were joking and that bothered me. These guys were like, ÔNow America knows what we go through.'"
Vince Cannistraro, former chief of operations for counter-terrorism with the CIA, says the red flag went up among investigators when it was discovered that some of the Israelis' names were found in a search of the national intelligence database. Cannistraro says many in the USA intelligence community believed that some of the Israelis were working for Mossad and there was speculation over whether Urban Moving had been "set up or exploited for the purpose of launching an intelligence operation against radical Islamists". This makes it clear that there was no suggestion whatsoever from within American intelligence that the Israelis were colluding with the 9/11 hijackers ? simply that the possibility remains that they knew the attacks were going to happen, but effectively did nothing to help stop them.
After the owner vanished, the offices of Urban Moving looked as if they'd been closed down in a big hurry. Mobile phones were littered about, the office phones were still connected and the property of at least a dozen clients were stacked up in the warehouse. The owner had cleared out his family home in New Jersey and returned to Israel.
Two weeks after their arrest, the Israelis were still in detention, held on immigration charges. Then a judge ruled that they should be deported. But the CIA scuppered the deal and the five remained in custody for another two months. Some went into solitary confinement, all underwent two polygraph tests and at least one underwent up to seven lie detector sessions before they were eventually deported at the end of November 2001. Paul Kurzberg refused to take a lie detector test for 10 weeks, but then failed it. His lawyer said he was reluctant to take the test as he had once worked for Israeli intelligence in another country.
Nevertheless, their lawyer, Ram Horvitz, dismissed the allegations as "stupid and ridiculous". Yet USA government sources still maintained that the Israelis were collecting information on the fundraising activities of groups like Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Mark Regev, of the Israeli embassy in Washington, would have none of that and he said the allegations were "simply false". The men themselves claimed they'd read about the World Trade Centre attacks on the internet, couldn't see it from their office and went to the parking lot for a better view. Their lawyers and the embassy say their ghoulish and sinister celebrations as the Twin Towers blazed and thousands died were due to youthful foolishness.

The respected New York Jewish newspaper, The Forward, reported in March 2002, however, that it had received a briefing on the case of the five Israelis from a USA official who was regularly updated by law enforcement agencies. This is what he told The Forward: "The assessment was that Urban Moving Systems was a front for the Mossad and operatives employed by it." He added that "the conclusion of the FBI was that they were spying on local Arabs", but the men were released because they "did not know anything about 9/11".

The men themselves claimed they'd read about the World Trade Centre attacks on the internet, couldn't see it from their office and went to the parking lot for a better view. Their lawyers and the embassy say their ghoulish and sinister celebrations as the Twin Towers blazed and thousands died were due to youthful foolishness.
Would friends of the USA jump for joy at the murder of thousands of its citizens?
The respected New York Jewish newspaper, The Forward, reported in March 2002, however, that it had received a briefing on the case of the five Israelis from a USA official who was regularly updated by law enforcement agencies. This is what he told The Forward: "The assessment was that Urban Moving Systems was a front for the Mossad and operatives employed by it." He added that "the conclusion of the FBI was that they were spying on local Arabs", but the men were released because they "did not know anything about 9/11".
Back in Israel, several of the men discussed what happened on an Israeli talk show. One of them made this remarkable comment: "The fact of the matter is we are coming from a country that experiences terror daily. Our purpose was to document the event." But how can you document an event unless you know it is going to happen?
We are now deep in conspiracy theory territory. But there is more than a little circumstantial evidence to show that Mossad ? whose motto is "By way of deception, thou shalt do war" ? was spying on Arab extremists in the USA and may have known that September 11 was in the offing, yet decided to withhold vital information from their American counterparts which could have prevented the terror attacks.
Following September 11, 2001, more than 60 Israelis were taken into custody under the Patriot Act and immigration laws. One highly placed investigator told Carl Cameron of Fox News that there were "tie-ins" between the Israelis and September 11; the hint was clearly that they'd gathered intelligence on the planned attacks but kept it to themselves. The Fox News source refused to give details, saying: "Evidence linking these Israelis to 9/11 is classified. I cannot tell you about evidence that has been gathered. It's classified information." Fox News is not noted for its condemnation of Israel; it's a ruggedly patriotic news channel owned by Rupert Murdoch and was President Bush's main cheerleader in the war on terror and the invasion of Iraq.
Another group of around 140 Israelis were detained prior to September 11, 2001, in the USA as part of a widespread investigation into a suspected espionage ring run by Israel inside the USA. Government documents refer to the spy ring as an "organised intelligence-gathering operation" designed to "penetrate government facilities". Most of those arrested had served in the Israeli armed forces ? but military service is compulsory in Israel. Nevertheless, a number had an intelligence background.
The first glimmerings of an Israeli spying exercise in the USA came to light in spring 2001, when the FBI sent a warning to other federal agencies alerting them to be wary of visitors calling themselves "Israeli art students" and attempting to bypass security at federal buildings in order to sell paintings. A Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) report suggested the Israeli calls "may well be an organised intelligence-gathering activity". Law enforcement documents say that the Israelis "targeted and penetrated military bases" as well as the DEA, FBI and dozens of government facilities, including secret offices and the unlisted private homes of law enforcement and intelligence personnel.
A number of Israelis questioned by the authorities said they were students from Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, but Pnina Calpen, a spokeswoman for the Israeli school, did not recognise the names of any Israelis mentioned as studying there in the past 10 years. A federal report into the so-called art students said many had served in intelligence and electronic signal intercept units during their military service.
According to a 61-page report, drafted after an investigation by the DEA and the USA immigration service, the Israelis were organised into cells of four to six people. The significance of what the Israelis were doing didn't emerge until after September 11, 2001, when a report by a French intelligence agency noted "according to the FBI, Arab terrorists and suspected terror cells lived in Phoenix, Arizona, as well as in Miami and Hollywood, Florida, from December 2000 to April 2001 in direct proximity to the Israeli spy cells".
The report contended that Mossad agents were spying on Mohammed Atta and Marwan al-Shehi, two of leaders of the 9/11 hijack teams. The pair had settled in Hollywood, Florida, along with three other hijackers, after leaving Hamburg ? where another Mossad team was operating close by.
Hollywood in Florida is a town of just 25,000 souls. The French intelligence report says the leader of the Mossad cell in Florida rented apartments "right near the apartment of Atta and al-Shehi". More than a third of the Israeli "art students" claimed residence in Florida. Two other Israelis connected to the art ring showed up in Fort Lauderdale. At one time, eight of the hijackers lived just north of the town.
Put together, the facts do appear to indicate that Israel knew that 9/11, or at least a large-scale terror attack, was about to take place on American soil, but did nothing to warn the USA. But that's not quite true. In August 2001, the Israelis handed over a list of terrorist suspects ? on it were the names of four of the September 11 hijackers. Significantly, however, the warning said the terrorists were planning an attack "outside the United States".
The Israeli embassy in Washington has dismissed claims about the spying ring as "simply untrue". The same denials have been issued repeatedly by the five Israelis seen high-fiving each other as the World Trade Centre burned in front of them. Their lawyer, Ram Horwitz, insisted his clients were not intelligence officers. Irit Stoffer, the Israeli foreign minister, said the allegations were "completely untrue". She said the men were arrested because of "visa violations", adding: "The FBI investigated those cases because of 9/11."
Jim Margolin, an FBI spokesman in New York, implied that the public would never know the truth, saying: "If we found evidence of unauthorised intelligence operations that would be classified material." Yet, Israel has long been known, according to USA administration sources, for "conducting the most aggressive espionage operations against the USA of any USA ally". Seventeen years ago, Jonathan Pollard, a civilian working for the American Navy, was jailed for life for passing secrets to Israel. At first, Israel claimed Pollard was part of a rogue operation, but the government later took responsibility for his work.
It has always been a long-accepted agreement among allies ? such as Britain and America or America and Israel ? that neither country will jail a "friendly spy" nor shame the allied country for espionage. Chip Berlet, a senior analyst at Boston's Political Research Associates and an expert in intelligence, says: "It's a backdoor agreement between allies that says that if one of your spies gets caught and didn't do too much harm, he goes home. It goes on all the time. The official reason is always visa violation."
What we are left with, then, is fact sullied by innuendo. Certainly, it seems, Israel was spying within the borders of the United States and it is equally certain that the targets were Islamic extremists probably linked to September 11. But did Israel know in advance that the Twin Towers would be hit and the world plunged into a war without end; a war which would give Israel the power to strike its enemies almost without limit? That's a conspiracy theory too far, perhaps. But the unpleasant feeling that, in this age of spin and secrets, we do not know the full and unadulterated truth won't go away. Maybe we can guess, but it's for the history books to discover and decide.

Recent US actions could signal Iran conflict soon
6 Iranians were detain in Irbil, Iraq. The US raided a facility that Iran claimed was being used for diplomatic purposes. The US alleges that detained Iranians were funneling weapons to the enemy.
Parts of President Bush's latest speech has been described as an obvious threat to Iran.
John Pike of GlobalSecurity.org notes that U.S. actions could signal a conflict in the near future. He says, "It's really unclear what the President was saying. It's a little more clear what the United States is actually doing. [President Bush] was basically calling on Iran not to interfere with Iraq, not to further interfere with Iraq. But, also, look at what he said the United States is going to do. As previously reported, several weeks ago, the aircraft carrier, John Stenos, is being dispatched to the Persian Gulf. That gives the United States two aircraft carriers in the Gulf. Round the clock operations. He also, surprisingly, announced that the United States was going to be deploying Patriot anti-missile interceptors to the region. It's difficult to imagine whose missiles those would be shooting down other than Iran. It's looks to me like the United States is, at least, raising its capabilities in preparation for possible military confrontation with Iran."
Pike provides a time frame in which the U.S. or Israel might first strike Iran. He explains, "I think the month of February is certainly a time of heightened probability. It's very difficult to understand exactly what the thinking is at the White House and in the Israeli government but for sometime now we've been saying that 2007 is probably the time, if there's going to be military action, it's probably going to come this year. Possible as soon as next month. Probably no later that August of this year.

US Iraq raid draws Iranian anger
US forces have stormed a building in the northern Iraqi town of Irbil and seized six people said to be Iranians, prompting a diplomatic incident.
Iranian and Iraqi officials said the building was an Iranian consulate and the detainees its employees.
The US military said it was still investigating, but that the building did not have diplomatic status.
The troops raided the building at about 0300 (0001GMT), taking away computers and papers, according to local media.
AFP news agency quoted Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman as saying he did not know the nationality of the six but said they were "suspected of being closely tied to activities targeting Iraq and coalition forces".
"I can confirm for you through our forces there that this is not a consulate or a government building," he said.
However, Tehran said the attack violated all international conventions. It has summoned ambassadors from Switzerland, representing US interests, and Iraq.
A spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry described the raid as an attempt to sabotage Tehran's relations with Iraq. One Iranian MP said it showed America's cruelty and meanness.
The raid comes amid high Iran-US tension.
In a major speech on Wednesday, President George W Bush said the US would take a tough stance towards Iran and Syria, whom he accused of destabilising Iraq.
The US also accuses Iran of seeking nuclear arms. Iran denies both charges.
Tehran counters that US military involvement in the Middle East endangers the whole region.

A local TV station said Kurdish security forces had taken over the building after the Americans had left.
Irbil lies in Iraq's Kurdish-controlled north, about 350km (220 miles) from the capital Baghdad. Reports say the Iranian consulate there was set up last year under an agreement with the Kurdish regional government to facilitate cross-border visits.
Dozens of casualties resulted from a truck bombing in Samarra
One Iranian news agency with a correspondent in Irbil says five US helicopters were used to land troops on the roof of the Iranian consulate.
It reports that a number of vehicles cordoned off the streets around the building, while US soldiers warned the occupants in three different languages that they should surrender or be killed.
In December, US troops detained a number of Iranians in Iraq, including two with diplomatic immunity who were later released.
Thursday's raid came as US President George W Bush unveiled his new strategy in Iraq, which included increasing troop numbers and a commitment to stop Iranian support for "our enemies in Iraq".
BBC diplomatic correspondent Jonathan Marcus says the raid could signal a ratcheting-up of pressure on the Iranians, in line with the rhetorical thrust of his speech.
Meanwhile in the Iraqi capital, the five off-duty policemen were killed in an ambush in the western al-Khadra neighbourhood, hospital officials said
Security sources said another man was killed wounded in an attack on a money changer in downtown Baghdad.
In the restive Anbar province, the US military said that one of its troops was killed on Tuesday by a roadside bombing.
Other violence was reported in Mosul, where gunmen killed a professor driving home from work, and Samarra where a suicide truck bomber attacked the mayor's house, killing three people and wounding 33, including the mayor.

The Eleventh Day of Every Month
There's a lot of sentiment going around that this is going to be the year that 9/11 truth breaks out and it does seem to me that all current indicators would agree. I think it's obvious that there's no stopping the truth - but in my opinion we really need to push it - accelerate - commit to do as much as we can every day to spread the truth, reach as many people as possible - in order to maximize the potential power in what is already an unstoppable force of nature. Because on the one hand we have Barbara Streisand's husband, HUSTLER magazine, one of the coolest directors in Hollywood and the impending Final Cut but on the other there's the psychopaths with the nukes and detention camps acting more desperate and dangerous by the day.
January 11, 2007 marks the 64th month since September 11, 2001. The criminals responsible for the 9/11 and ongoing psyop and mass murder campaign are not only free and at large but they are now publicly fantasizing about nuking countries full of people you and I will never meet. Here in the land of the free the majority seems to be asleep to just exactly what a nationalized ID card means or the fact that they will soon be required to carry one. A fully operational concentration camp system has been set up for immigrants under ICE. All legal blocks to a total police state have now been removed and "radicals" are invoked even before "terrorists" in the Puppet-in-Chief's latest threatening utterances regarding the security of the Homeland.
We've got to act and we've got act visibly on a regular basis.
It's been suggested that the eleventh day of every month be observed as a day of united action for the truth. The idea being for truth activists everywhere to all act together on a regular, ongoing basis. I think it's a great idea and I'm going to do everything I can to promote it and I know a number of other people are too. From now on I will observe the anniversary of 9/11 every month with action and I encourage everyone else to do the same. I think this idea could grow into a powerful unifying force for the truth movement in a fairly short amount of time. We have grown so much over the past year - we can be a truly amazing force for change if we act together. Imagine the effect it will have when national days of truth action are occurring monthly with ever increasing participation, creativity and visibility.
So let the eleventh day of every month be a day of united action for truth -

IntroductionÀ l’heure où grands médias et dirigeants socialistes nous invitent à nous rallier au « blairisme », le brulôt que Terry Jones consacre à la Croisade américaine contre « le terrorisme » constitue une formidable alternative : un « autre modèle anglais », « notre modèle anglais à nous ». Ce livre est en effet exemplaire à plus d’un titre : composé de chroniques courtes et d’une lecture aisée, il propose une analyse de la novlangue « bushienne », aussi minutieuse que celle d’un Viktor Klemperer [1] ou d’un George Orwell [2], avec en prime la verve comique des Monty Python - dont Terry Jones a été l’un des fondateurs et des principaux animateurs. Ce qui est remarquable, surtout, et difficilement imaginable au pays de Philippe Val [3], c’est qu’un « amuseur public » délaisse les salles de spectacle ou les plateaux de télévision pour passer à l’écrit et aborder des sujets graves sans pour autant perdre son humour, sans devenir sinistre et pontifiant - et sans virer « vieux con » élitiste, réactionnaire, pro-américain, anti-arabe et islamophobe ! Il est bien là, le « miracle anglais » : un petit livre intelligent, radical, féroce, drôle, et - si le mot a encore un sens - de gauche ! Le texte qui suit est une présentation de ce livre ; il a été rédigé par Damien-Guillaume et Marie-Blanche Audollent, traducteurs de Ma guerre contre la « guerre au terrorisme » [4].

Il est des mots qu’on ne prononce pas impunément. Même dans nos « démocraties », et surtout pas lors de la grand-messe d’un gouvernement triomphant. En ce jeudi 29 septembre 2005, à Brighton, la conférence annuelle du New Labour blairien, reconduit aux affaires quelques mois plus tôt pour un historique troisième mandat, bat son plein. À la tribune, Jack Straw, ministre des Affaires étrangères, disserte doctement sur la « libération » de l’Irak, devant un parterre de délégués venus des quatre coins du Royaume-Uni, lorsque fuse du public un discret mais cinglant « Nonsense ! »
Aussitôt empoigné par les pandores du service d’ordre, l’auteur de cet éclat, Walter Wolfgang, est expulsé sans ménagements, tandis que le ministériel orateur reprend le fil de son propos. Quand l’importun - un octogénaire juif, qui a fui l’Allemagne hitlérienne en 1938 - tente de réintégrer la salle de conférence, il se voit aussitôt menacé d’inculpation sous le coup de la récente loi antiterroriste.
Tony Blair et sa clique auront beau, dès le lendemain, se répandre en plates excuses sur tous les plateaux de télévision, le mal est fait : les grands de ce monde n’apprécient guère qu’on se mêle de pointer l’inanité criminelle de leurs rodomontades. Cette anecdote, que les médias français n’ont quasiment pas relayée, prend valeur de symbole : celui de l’affolement qui, face à l’indignation populaire ou à la simple expression d’un désaccord, s’empare des autorités « démocratiques ».
C’est à ce genre de petits détails qu’on mesure ce qui a changé depuis que la Maison Blanche et Downing Street ont lancé, dans la foulée des attentats contre le World Trade Center et le Pentagone, leur « combat monumental du Bien contre le Mal ». Quelques déluges de fer et de feu plus tard, relayant une vérité embedded claironnée de Londres à Washington, les éditorialistes des deux côtés de l’Atlantique saluent, la main sur le cœur, le « vent de liberté » qui souffle sur le Proche et le Moyen-Orient. La « démocratie » est en marche ; la « guerre au terrorisme » porte ses fruits : circulez, il n’y a rien à voir !
Cependant, n’en déplaise à ses tailleurs (de costard), l’empereur est nu : Oussama Ben Laden court toujours, et Saddam Hussein n’avait pas d’Armes de Destruction Massive ; qui plus est, de Guantánamo Bay à Abou Ghraib, en passant par Bagram et de nombreuses prisons secrètes « délocalisées », l’Amérique torture au nom d’une « liberté » qui, servant de faux nez à ses ambitions impérialistes, est de plus en plus bafouée à travers le monde.
« La première victime de la guerre, c’est la grammaire »
Au soir du 11 Septembre, l’Occident frappé de stupeur erre à tâtons dans un monde en ruine. Incroyable, innommable, indicible : il n’y a pas de mots pour dire le désastre. C’est d’abord dans le pouvoir de sidération de cette horreur sans nom que s’enracine notre défaillance à contrecarrer les dérives qui ont suivi la chute des tours : avec elles, s’est effondrée notre aptitude à échafauder dans la langue des images d’une réalité mal dite qui, en nous la rendant intelligible, nous délivreraient du vertige insensé de cette malédiction. « Ground Zero, note Christian Salmon, c’est une zone de langage effondré. Au pied des tours en ruine, c’est le récit américain qui gît en pièces. » [5]
« Ou vous êtes avec nous, ou vous êtes contre nous » : afin de recoller les morceaux de leur autorité symbolique, les dirigeants américains sautent sur l’occasion pour se replier tambour battant sur un discours manichéen, qui menace et tranche. À ma droite, la démocratie, blanche comme l’agneau ; à ma gauche, le terrorisme aux noirs desseins. Foi d’Aristote, c’est beau comme de l’antique !
Mais le spectacle du monde a toujours partie liée avec la grammaire qui l’articule : Eux et Nous, le Bien et le Mal, le Vrai et le Faux sont d’abord des choix de mise en scène. Sitôt distribuées les cartes de ce jeu de dupes, qui condamne les « cerveaux disponibles » au suivisme électoral et patriotique, le langage est pris de curieuses contorsions. Triomphe d’une nouvelle et fruste grammaire, dont les règles perverties orchestrent les récits pernicieux de la « guerre au terrorisme ».
Révolté par l’hypocrisie du pouvoir et l’inertie du plus grand nombre, Terry Jones - écrivain, comédien et metteur en scène britannique - a décidé de contre-attaquer, pour démasquer les contradictions que recèle cette « guerre » et la forfaiture qu’elle constitue. Passant au crible d’une implacable verve satirique les faits d’armes et les méfaits de langue de George W. Bush et Tony Blair, l’ex-Monty Python revisite avec une féroce nonchalance les arcanes d’une croisade irrationnelle et mensongère. La quarantaine de textes qu’il a ciselés au fil des mois [6] nous invite à renouer les fils d’une réflexion trop souvent contaminée par la novlangue des « informations » :
« Mon dictionnaire, écrit-il lors du déclenchement de l’offensive contre l’Irak, définit une “guerre” comme un “conflit ouvert, armé, entre deux parties, nations ou États”. Dès lors, larguer des bombes, protégé par l’altitude, sur une population déjà en difficulté, aux infrastructures ruinées par des années de sanctions et vivant sous la coupe d’un régime oppressif, ce n’est pas une “guerre”. C’est du tir aux pigeons. »
Quelque temps plus tard, il note :
« la vraie “guerre” n’a commencé qu’après l’occupation de l’Irak et la mise en place d’un gouvernement de collabos [...]. Mais est-ce ainsi que les journaux, la télévision et la radio la désignent ? Non : ils parlent d’“insurrection” et de “terrorisme”, parce que ce sont les mots qu’aiment employer MM. Bush et Blair. »
Et les grands médias « reprennent tous en chœur l’air de pipeau que jouent ceux qui sont au pouvoir ».
Constatant que « la première victime de la guerre, c’est la grammaire », Terry Jones se met en devoir de traquer les symptômes de cette « guerre des mots » secrètement déclarée à l’opinion publique par les spin doctors de la Maison Blanche et de Downing Street, au détour de leur campagne contre le « terrorisme », ennemi aussi insaisissable que flou :
« Le langage est censé rendre les idées claires, et compréhensibles pour tout un chacun, écrit-il. Mais [...] il est impossible de faire la guerre à un substantif abstrait : comment saura-t-on qu’on a gagné ? Quand le terme en question aura été supprimé du dictionnaire, peut-être ? »
La novlangue, contre la tentation de réfléchir
Si les mots ont un sens, cette querelle sémantique est tout sauf dérisoire. Nous aurions tort de sous-estimer la gravité de ces dommages collatéraux que le désastre du 11 Septembre n’en finit pas d’entraîner dans son sillage. Car, au-delà des fables du pouvoir et des errements journalistiques, ils nous posent une question plus fondamentale : celle de la langue, malmenée aujourd’hui par cette croisade « civilisée » et manichéenne contre l’Axe du Mal comme elle le fut, toutes proportions gardées, à l’aube des totalitarismes du siècle dernier.
« Le nazisme s’insinua dans la chair et le sang du grand nombre à travers des expressions isolées, des tournures, des formes syntaxiques qui s’imposaient à des millions d’exemplaires et qui furent adoptées de façon mécanique et inconsciente » [7], écrivait Victor Klemperer. Soixante ans plus tard, il n’est pas inutile de méditer la leçon de ce philologue juif allemand écarté en 1935 de sa chaire à l’université de Dresde, qui tint le journal secret des mutations que le nazisme faisait subir à la langue allemande : c’est par une résistance dans la langue que l’on pourra sortir de l’hébétude, « maintenir et incarner la continuité de la raison et de la pensée critique face à la tyrannie » [8].
Ce qui est en jeu ? La réflexion, la liberté et la démocratie : aujourd’hui comme hier, en matière de mots, « moins le choix est étendu, moindre est la tentation de réfléchir », disait déjà George Orwell [9]. « Les discours et les écrits politiques, écrit encore l’auteur de 1984, sont aujourd’hui pour l’essentiel une défense de l’indéfendable », en tant qu’ils servent à justifier, en les recouvrant d’un voile pudique, des faits qui ne peuvent être défendus qu’ « à l’aide d’arguments d’une brutalité insupportable à la plupart des gens, et qui ne cadrent pas avec les buts affichés des partis politiques » :
« Des villages sans défense subissent des bombardements aériens, leurs habitants sont chassés dans les campagnes, leur bétail est mitraillé, leurs huttes sont détruites par des bombes incendiaires : cela s’appelle la pacification. Des milliers de paysans sont expulsés de leur ferme et jetés sur les routes sans autre viatique que ce qu’ils peuvent emporter : cela s’appelle un transfert de population ou une rectification de frontière. Des gens sont emprisonnés sans jugement pendant des années, ou abattus d’une balle dans la nuque, ou envoyés dans les camps [...] : cela s’appelle l’élimination des éléments suspects. Cette phraséologie est nécessaire si l’on veut nommer les choses sans évoquer les images mentales correspondantes ». [10]
Il est stupéfiant de constater à quel point l’observation faite par Orwell se transpose, mot pour mot, au jargon employé de nos jours par les pouvoirs et les médias dominants. Grâce à cette fossilisation de la langue et de la pensée, les dirigeants anglo-américains ont réussi à maintenir depuis plus de quatre ans, au mépris de l’opposition affichée par leurs populations et des millions de personnes à travers le monde, le cap d’une guerre effaçant la frontière entre absurdité et horreur. L’actuelle administration américaine ne s’embarrasse pas de la réalité des faits ; quand ceux-ci lui sont défavorables, elle les noie sous un flot de mensonges plus dociles. Sûre de son fait, elle se berce de son propre mythe, assignant la réalité - complexe, ambiguë et mouvante - à résidence, dans un vocabulaire définitif et mortifère :
« Peu importe ce que les gens croient réellement, note Terry Jones. Ce qui compte, c’est comment les faire rentrer dans le rang. »
Enfoncer les digues de notre torpeur
Sœur jumelle de la guerre perpétuelle de 1984, l’actuelle « guerre au terrorisme » ne cherche pas à connaître l’histoire et le présent, mais plutôt à les fabriquer, et au besoin à les falsifier. « Qu’ils aient tort ou raison, les États-Unis ont le pouvoir de créer des faits accomplis » [11] : ce constat formulé par Hubert Védrine, ancien ministre français des Affaires étrangères, il importe d’en saisir la véritable portée. Pour nous y aider, Terry Jones rapporte, dans un texte magistral en forme de conversation téléphonique où Bush dame le pion à Dieu en personne, ces paroles terribles d’un proche conseiller du président américain :
« La communauté des adeptes de la réalité n’est plus en phase avec la marche du monde. Maintenant que nous sommes un empire, nous créons par nos actes notre propre réalité. Et pendant que vous observerez cette réalité - judicieusement, comme vous ne manquerez pas de le faire -, nous agirons de nouveau, créant d’autres nouvelles réalités, que vous pourrez également observer, et c’est comme ça que le monde avance. Nous sommes les acteurs de l’histoire... et vous, vous en serez tous réduits à la simple observation de ce que nous faisons. » [12]
Quand des gouvernants profèrent des mots d’ordre aussi méprisants, ce sont les fondements mêmes du pacte démocratique qui sont menacés, ainsi que l’explique Hannah Arendt :
« Le sujet idéal du règne totalitaire n’est ni le nazi convaincu, ni le communiste convaincu, mais l’homme pour qui la distinction entre fait et fiction (c’est-à-dire la réalité de l’expérience) et la distinction entre vrai et faux (c’est-à-dire les normes de la pensée) n’existent plus. » [13]
Comme tous les conflits, et peut-être plus encore, la « guerre au terrorisme » organise une savante confusion entre messies et lanternes, entre récits et balivernes. Résister en écrivain, c’est desserrer l’étreinte des définitions, des identités et des frontières ; c’est forger des histoires qui, en sapant leur arbitraire, restituent à la pensée une prise sur les événements qui nous traversent. D’où l’angle d’attaque choisi par Terry Jones, dans cette offensive tous azimuts pour retourner la duplicité des mots troubles contre leurs fauteurs. Œil pour œil, cliché pour cliché : le nonsense est la chose au monde la mieux partagée.
Loin de n’être qu’un assemblage hétéroclite de fragments épars, semés au gré du vent des événements, ce livre tisse la toile d’une entreprise cohérente, bien que multiforme : soumettre cette logique de guerre à de subtils détournements, qui révèlent ses implications les plus insensées ; explorer l’absurde inhumanité qui tend à envahir notre espace public et privé sous les coups de boutoir de singuliers glissements de sens ; opposer une nuée de saynètes, de contes et de digressions minuscules au nihilisme et à la transparence des Discours Uniques et Majuscules.
Au total, ces chroniques politiques sont tout sauf un épiphénomène dans une œuvre d’un rare éclectisme. Faisant feu de toute langue de bois, Terry Jones n’a de cesse de s’appuyer, comme aux temps du Flying Circus ou de Sacré Graal, sur le recyclage virtuose d’éléments de la culture populaire :
« Si faire de l’humour ou raconter des histoires a quelque sens, explique-t-il, c’est celui de dire en même temps quelque chose sur le monde. J’aime l’idée qu’une histoire très simple puisse cependant receler quelque vérité fondamentale. Les Habits neufs de l’empereur, d’Andersen, par exemple : voilà une histoire géniale sur la politique et la propagande, mais c’est un récit tout simple, et même les enfants comprennent très bien de quoi il s’agit. » [14]
Ce recours au conte et à la fable est au cœur de l’offensive littéraire de l’ancien Python, contre l’un des paradoxes majeurs de cette société du spectacle et de l’information, où « nous sommes informés de tout, mais nous ne nous rendons compte de rien », comme le souligne Eduardo Galeano dans un livre indispensable [15]. Procédant au dévoilement de ce qui se joue sous nos yeux et que nous semblons ne pas voir, Terry Jones recoupe, détourne, subvertit le flux des « informations » pour enfoncer les digues de notre torpeur. Dans une version très contemporaine de l’histoire du « roi nu » [16], il se tient aux côtés de l’humble gamin d’Andersen, qui refuse les certitudes sur ordonnance :
« “L’Irak, oui, bombardons ce truc-là. Ça rendra le monde plus sûr.” C’est comme dans Les Habits neufs de l’empereur, on prend des décisions de fous à lier, et au bout du compte personne n’y trouve rien à redire. » [17]
Le nonsense, ou le venin comme antidote
Quand le monde marche sur la tête, il ne reste plus qu’à le prendre au pied de la lettre : c’est l’un des ressorts majeurs de la tradition britannique du nonsense, qui demeure trop souvent frappé d’incompréhensible exotisme à nos yeux franchouillards. « L’humour anglais, écrivait Pierre Desproges, souligne avec amertume et désespoir l’absurdité du monde. L’humour français se rit de ma belle-mère. » [18] Mais cette spécialité insulaire semble appelée à rencontrer chez nous un écho grandissant, si l’on en croit Robert Benayoun :
« Nous atteignons peut-être un âge du nonsense. Cette grâce typiquement anglo-saxonne presque indéfinissable [...] frappe finalement notre entendement français si prosaïque et si ratiocineur. Le chaos financier et social où nous sommes, balayant les mécanismes burlesques nationaux les plus lénifiants (la fameuse ironie à la française) défoule-t-il enfin chez nos compatriotes, sous une forme plus spontanément irrationnelle, les inquiétudes latentes en un culte soudain du sens dessus dessous ? » [19]
Ces lignes semblent écrites pour la France d’aujourd’hui, qui se débat dans la crise politique, économique, sociale et morale que l’on sait ; pourtant, elles furent publiées au tournant des années 1970 et 1980. À l’époque - est-ce un hasard ? - où les Monty Python étaient occupés à se tailler une réputation mondiale en lançant depuis l’Angleterre pré-thatchérienne quelques-unes des plaisanteries les plus improbables et les plus corrosives de l’époque. Sexe, religion, pouvoir, perroquets morts, Inquisition espagnole et ministères des démarches stupides : le nonsense selon Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones et Michael Palin interroge à sa manière - réfractaire et inspirée - le sacré, le sens de la vie et l’absurdité d’un monde de banquiers de la City et de soldats coloniaux.
Qu’en est-il resté ? À la parution de leur autobiographie, en 2003, les intéressés esquissaient un inventaire mi-goguenard, mi-rageur :
« Terry Jones se souvient d’un prof qui lui avait dit : “Avant les Monty Python, les gosses dans les cours de récréation se tapaient dessus. Maintenant, ils font les cons.” Et John Cleese de personnes “qui ne pouvaient plus regarder les infos après avoir vu notre show”. Il n’y a guère que Terry Gilliam pour penser que les Python peuvent être dangereux : “On a érigé l’absurde au rang de genre artistique à part entière et c’est peut-être à cause de ça que des types comme George W. Bush peuvent finir à la Maison Blanche, explique Gilliam. Parce que si les gens avaient réfléchi au lieu de se marrer devant nos conneries, ils n’auraient jamais laissé faire une chose pareille...” » [20]
Nulle volonté, cependant, chez ces incorrigibles récalcitrants, de jouer les procureurs ou de donner des leçons - mais un appel à la réflexion, à l’indépendance et à la résistance. L’humour pythonesque ne s’embarrasse pas de choisir son camp ; il déserte, toujours et partout. Quel serait aujourd’hui le point de vue des Monty Python sur l’actualité ?
« J’espère qu’une sorte de regard se dégage naturellement de tout ce qu’on a fait, répond Terry Jones. Si vous essayez dès le départ d’écrire avec un point de vue, alors ça risque de tourner au prêchi-prêcha. Mais j’espère que, de la masse de travail que nous avons produite, il ressort une certaine position, sans doute pas une posture unique et figée, peut-être plutôt une attitude interrogative : ayez une pensée autonome. » [21]
Tel demeure l’enjeu - pas si « tarte à la crème » qu’il y paraît, et plus que jamais à l’ordre du jour - d’un humour aussi radical dans le choix des cibles que dans celui des munitions.
La satire, une arme contre le mensonge politique
Aujourd’hui comme hier, l’ironie offre un antidote souverain contre les tissus de mensonges des pouvoirs de tout poil. Mais jusqu’où peut-on aller trop loin dans la satire ? Pour se faire une idée de la réponse que Terry Jones, fort de son expérience avec les Monty Python, apporte à cette question, une petite incursion dans l’histoire littéraire anglaise s’impose, sur les traces de quelques figures tutélaires, expertes en armes de dérision massive.
1702 : Daniel Defoe (v. 1660-1731), futur auteur de Robinson Crusoé, diffuse The Shortest Way with the Dissenters, un pamphlet grinçant qui préconise l’éradication pure et simple des minorités religieuses en terre anglicane. Destinée à soulever un mouvement de protestation chez les libéraux, l’intransigeance scabreuse que l’auteur affecte d’enfourcher fait scandale. Pour radical que soit son texte, il ne l’est sans doute pas assez, car de nombreux anglicans extrémistes, qui le croient écrit par l’un des leurs, s’en réclament !
« C’est cruauté de tuer un serpent ou un crapaud de sang-froid, écrit perfidement Defoe dans ce libelle qui lui vaudra quelques semaines de prison, mais leur nature empoisonnée change en charité pour nos voisins la destruction de ces créatures, non pour quelque blessure qu’ils nous auraient causée, mais par prévention ; non pour le mal qu’ils ont fait, mais pour celui qu’ils pourraient faire. » Tiens, tiens... L’essayiste aurait-il pressenti l’inanité faisandée du concept de « guerre préventive » ?
1729 : doyen de la cathédrale Saint-Patrick à Dublin, et fervent partisan de la cause irlandaise, Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) publie A Modest Proposal for Preventing the Children of Poor People in Ireland from Being a Burden to Their Parents or Country, and for Making Them Beneficial to the Public (« Modeste proposition pour empêcher les enfants des pauvres d’Irlande d’être à la charge de leurs parents ou de leur pays et pour les rendre utiles au public »). La démesure du titre reflète l’énormité de la charge : en fait de « modeste proposition », Swift suggère de vendre la jeunesse irlandaise - malheureuse, oisive et vicieuse, naturellement - comme mets de choix sur la table des nantis. L’extinction du paupérisme implique la dévoration - non pas symbolique mais bien réelle - des sacrifiés d’un système social inhumain. Solution qui aurait le mérite de soulager définitivement ceux qui ploient sous le faix, tout en rassasiant ceux qui croulent sous l’or et le pouvoir.
Comme pour Defoe, le rire glacial de Swift, qui démasque le cynisme et la cruauté d’un certain discours sur l’ordre social et la misère, fait scandale du côté des lecteurs naïfs - ce qui ne manquera pas de valoir à l’ecclésiastique quelques difficultés dans sa carrière. Sous sa plume, qui vise autant le sort fait aux pauvres que l’obscénité des solutions proposées par les politiques, le ridicule prend des proportions gigantesques et devient enfin visible, par un brusque retournement socratique. Feindre l’ignorance pour révéler celle de l’autre, creuser le mensonge pour l’exposer au grand jour : cette méthode ne pouvait manquer de séduire André Breton, lequel place Swift à l’ouverture de sa célèbre Anthologie de l’humour noir. À son tour, l’ancien Python en fait ici son miel et, via quelques venimeuses et swiftiennes propositions, son cheval de Troie pour ruiner d’autres tartuferies...
Defoe et Swift traînent une injuste réputation d’auteurs pour la jeunesse - autrement dit, selon un cliché tenace, d’écrivains mineurs. Le même sort guette Terry Jones, qui a par ailleurs écrit de nombreux ouvrages « pour enfants » [22]. Ce malentendu empêche de lire leurs satires pour ce qu’elles sont : de redoutables machines de guerre contre la bêtise des fanatismes, les impostures de la science et les compromissions de la politique. Il suffit, pour s’en convaincre, de relire ce qu’écrit Orwell à propos de la critique visionnaire, chez Swift, de ce qu’on n’appelait pas encore « totalitarisme » :
« Il anticipe avec une lucidité extraordinaire l’“État policier” [...] avec ses perpétuelles chasses aux hérétiques et ses procès pour trahison, organisés à seule fin de neutraliser le mécontentement populaire en le transformant en hystérie guerrière. [...] Il y a quelque chose d’étrangement familier dans l’atmosphère de ces chapitres, car on y trouve, mêlée à beaucoup de bouffonnerie, l’intuition que l’un des buts du totalitarisme est non seulement de s’assurer que les gens pensent correctement, mais surtout de les rendre moins conscients. » [23]
Il est frappant de constater combien cette description d’un monde totalitaire évoque notre époque, pareillement faite d’aveuglement collectif et d’hystérie sécuritaire.
Chaucer et la « guerre à l’hérésie »
Cette digression en forme de plongée dans l’Angleterre pré-capitaliste des Lumières nous mène, d’un nouveau saut de puce, en plein Moyen Âge... En effet, Terry Jones, loin de tenir tout entier dans le rôle d’amuseur public auquel on le résume parfois, est aussi historien, féru d’histoire et de littérature médiévales. Ce n’est pas un hasard si cet ancien élève de la Royal Grammar School (Guilford) et du St. Edmund Hall College (université d’Oxford) s’est tourné vers le Moyen Âge : là aussi, l’iconoclaste - qui s’arrange toujours, quand il raconte une histoire, pour mettre au jour, en passant, quelques faux-semblants du monde contemporain - s’attache de livre en livre [24] à saper les fondements de l’historiographie officielle, encombrée de stéréotypes.
Particulièrement intrigante, de ce point de vue, est la figure de Geoffrey Chaucer (v. 1340-v. 1400), auteur de ce monument fondateur que sont les Contes de Canterbury, qui disparut au tournant du XIVe et du XVe siècles. Ni tombe, ni testament, ni mention dans les chroniques : la fin de celui qui fut salué comme l’un des esprits les plus brillants de son temps reste entourée d’une énigme singulière. Et si sa personnalité et ses écrits, encouragés par le libéral et raffiné Richard II, étaient devenus gênants, voire hérétiques, dans le contexte du nouveau régime, brutal et réactionnaire, d’Henry IV l’usurpateur ?
De ce mystère, Terry Jones, membre de la New Chaucer Society, a tiré avec quelques complices la matière d’une enquête historique sur les circonstances de la mort de l’immense écrivain et les agissements en coulisses de certains seigneurs de guerre médiévaux [25]. Sous l’investigation érudite, pointe le venin du satiriste qui a médité la leçon de Swift et Defoe : pas de quartier ! « Le cerveau dans cette affaire, c’était l’archevêque d’Arundel : le Henry Kissinger de l’époque. Il s’est comporté en tous points comme aujourd’hui. Il a installé son pouvoir illégitime, illégal ; il a menti et triché pour s’emparer du pouvoir. Puis il a neutralisé l’opposition en déclarant une guerre à l’hérésie. Exactement ce qu’il lui fallait : une guerre sans fin, contre un ennemi qu’il pouvait définir à sa guise. Il a donc dit : “Ou vous êtes avec nous, ou vous êtes des hérétiques”. » [26]
Un substantif abstrait pris pour cible d’une guerre tous azimuts, un ennemi que l’on peut définir à sa guise... : voilà qui résonne étrangement avec le contexte géopolitique actuel. Le terrorisme serait-il l’hérésie des temps modernes ? « Au XIVe siècle, poursuit Terry Jones, on avait recours aux mêmes mécanismes et aux mêmes leviers de pouvoir que ceux qu’on emploie aujourd’hui dans la guerre au terrorisme. »
« Chaque époque a sa propre histoire, écrit-il. L’Histoire, c’est en réalité les histoires qu’on se répète à soi-même afin de tenter de les rendre pertinentes à ses propres yeux. » [27] Ainsi, l’idée que nous nous faisons du Moyen Âge est héritée du XIXe siècle, époque où
« l’Angleterre s’est mise à chercher dans l’histoire de quoi justifier la violence nécessaire à la fondation d’un empire. Et il va sans doute se passer la même chose en Amérique dans les années à venir, le prince Rumsfeld et lord Wolfowitz repoussant à l’infini les frontières de leur empire et justifiant la violence. Les choses ne changent pas vraiment, et les raisons de faire la guerre encore moins. Wolfowitz, Perle, Rumsfeld : ils se font tous du fric grâce à la guerre... Et c’est pour ça aussi qu’on faisait la guerre au Moyen Âge. Si le duc de Gloucester et le duc de Warwick ont pris en sainte horreur la politique de paix avec la France menée par Richard II, c’est parce que la paix ne leur rapportait rien : ils voulaient la guerre. Les va-t-en-guerre, c’est pareil à toutes les époques : ils se font du fric ». [28]
« Les similitudes entre “jadis” et “maintenant” m’intéressent davantage que les différences, explique encore Terry Jones. Si j’étais un historien professionnel, je m’intéresserais sans doute plus aux différences, mais ce sont les ressemblances qui me passionnent. Ce sont elles qui donnent vie au passé. » [29] Avec sa chasse aux hérétiques, ses élites va-t-en-guerre et son arbitraire institutionnalisé, le Moyen Âge nous ressemble bien plus qu’on n’ose se l’avouer.
Un livre hérétique, contre la transparence opaque des mots d’ordre
« Une abondance de mensonges politiques est une marque certaine de la liberté anglaise », est-il écrit dans L’Art du mensonge politique (1733), attribué à Jonathan Swift. À cette aune, le gouvernement de Tony Blair aura sans conteste été un grand pourvoyeur de liberté outre-Manche. Et l’on avait sans doute en Grande-Bretagne (de même qu’en Italie ou dans l’Espagne de José Maria Aznar) de meilleures raisons qu’en France pour s’indigner contre une guerre injustifiable.
Chez nous, la posture adoptée naguère à l’ONU par Jacques Chirac et Dominique de Villepin était certes plus à même d’emporter l’adhésion populaire. Mais l’oukase du président Bush (« Ou vous êtes avec nous, ou vous êtes contre nous ») fait trop souvent office, chez nous aussi, de cadre théorique et tactique aux positionnements et bavardages « intellectuels ». Afin de disqualifier ceux qui manifestent leur refus d’un tel ultimatum, fut inventé l’« anti-américanisme » - primaire, forcément ! -, épouvantail brandi par de piètres dons Quichotte, qui jouent les anti-antis pour mieux dissimuler leurs propres égarements...
Nul ne saurait nier que les tentations impérialistes à l’œuvre dans les États-Unis d’aujourd’hui sont porteuses de nombreux dangers. Il est urgent d’allumer des contre-feux ; et ce livre apporte sa part d’informations inédites et troublantes - comme, par exemple, l’exégèse du programme du Projet pour le nouveau siècle américain (PNAC) [30], quasiment passé sous silence en France. Rares sont les voix dissidentes qui savent, comme celle de Terry Jones, malmener la transparence frauduleuse des mots du pouvoir, tout en se préservant par une sombre ironie des pièges de l’angélisme et, par un humanisme entêté, des ornières du cynisme.
Dans ce temps où, selon le poète Philippe Jaccottet, « le réel est chaque jour mieux dissimulé par un vacarme dépourvu de sens, sinon d’efficacité » [31], dans ce monde où le consensuel brouhaha médiatique travaille à fabriquer du « temps de cerveau humain disponible » [32], la perversion du sens des mots dissimule la barbarie sans visage et sans nom des puissances de l’argent. Interroger les mots d’ordre de notre « civilisation » aveuglée par sa propre puissance ; secouer nos esprits engourdis et nos bouches cousues... de fil blanc ; faire voler en éclats le Grand Récit de l’Ordre Militaire, Médiatique et Marchand (GROMMM) : tel est le (vaste) projet de ce livre insoumis, qui métamorphose en Grand-Guignol ’pataphysique la croisade du père Ubu(sh) contre l’Axe du Mal.
On se souvient (peut-être) du scandale qui entoura la sortie du film La Vie de Brian, en 1983. « Attention, se rebiffe Terry Jones, c’est un film hérétique, pas blasphématoire. » [33] Qu’il brocarde, comme alors, la propension humaine à se diviser en groupuscules et en sectes, ou qu’il couvre de ridicule, comme ici, la prétention absolutiste de fables meurtrières, l’ex-Python évite le blasphème - c’est-à-dire l’imprécation rageuse et impuissante - et revendique l’hérésie - c’est-à-dire une tentative pour ruiner l’autorité du dogme.
Pour n’avoir pas été assez féroce, Daniel Defoe fut cloué au pilori par des esprits bas de plafond. De même, Jonathan Swift eut à endurer les suites de la lecture au premier degré que certains firent de ses virulentes satires politiques et religieuses : on les a pris au sérieux... et à la gorge. Comme ses intarissables prédécesseurs, qui publiaient à tour de bras, sur les sujets les plus variés et les plus improbables, Terry Jones mord toujours là où on ne l’attend pas. Mais lui, on le prend pour un farceur.
Que se passerait-il au juste si « les gens réfléchissaient au lieu de se marrer devant [ses] conneries », pour reprendre les paroles de Terry Gilliam à propos des Monty Python ? Précisément : à lire cette chronique roborative d’un monde en guerre, on est moins con de s’être marré. Dépêchons-nous de réfléchir, car le nonsense de l’histoire continue de s’écrire en lettres de feu et de sang - avec notre silencieux assentiment.
